After being leaked early last year and officially debuted at Baselworld 2013, the OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch “Dark Side of the Moon” is finally available to purchase. In a nod to the Apollo 8 astronauts who were the first to see the dark side of the moon with their own eyes, OMEGA has released its first all-black ceramic watch paying homage to the Speedmaster Professional chronographs worn by every Apollo astronaut.
The watch is a reinvention of the Moonwatch Professional and features a Co-Axial calibre 9300 Swiss movement, housed in a case, bezel and dial all made out of a single block of black ceramic, which takes 20 times longer to create than a stainless steel version. A coated nylon fabric strap with red stitching is attached via black ceramic lugs and finished with a black ceramic buckle. Super-LumiNova coats the indexes, two dots at the 12, and the 18K white gold hour, minute and chronograph hands, while the matte chromium nitride tachymeter scale is engraved into the bezel with laser technology. “Dark Side of the Moon” is engraved on the caseback, and the watch is finished off with a sapphire crystal face with anti-reflective treatment.
