While many brands have created ways for consumers to digitally track the progress of their workouts, few have sought to integrate the technology into the non-footwear-related equipment of the sports themselves. Thus, sports technology company 94Fifty has stepped in to introduce a Bluetooth-equipped basketball. Billed as “motion sensor basketballs for rapid skills development,” the basketballs, created in conjunction with Spalding, allow users to chronicle a variety of data related to dribbling, passing, shooting and more, all while boasting competition modes for up to four players, specially designed workouts and analysis of one’s shooting form. Powered by internal batteries that can be recharged wirelessly, the 94Fifty Bluetooth Basketball is due to be available in October with a retail price of $200 USD.

Properly calibrating your TV and sound system is essential for getting the best picture and sound out of your gear — but few do it. Short of hiring a professional to take the work off of your plate, DIY solutions are grim: buying special discs and wading through various complex menus to get the job done. The THX Tune-Up App (Free, for now, $2 later) is a welcomed update to the process in a smartphone-dominated world. The app walks users through six different video calibration techniques including aspect ratio, brightness, contrast, color and tint via a series of easy tutorials. There’s also two separate tweaks for optimizing speaker assignments and phase.
In order to work, though, the app must connect to the display using either an HDMI/VGA/Component adaptor, or in the case of Apple users, wirelessly through Airplay via the Apple TV’s mirroring capabilities — so make sure to have either on hand if you expect to accomplish anything. After connecting and selecting the brand and type of equipment in your setup, the app displays a variety of test patterns and real-world photos that can then be used to tweak your display’s various picture controls for optimal results. It even leverages your smartphone’s camera to tackle color and tint settings, which older solutions handled through special Elton John-style tinted specs.

Have you ever been disappointed in the musical selection at a bar? Want to put Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades” on repeat all night but can’t find it? Can’t stand listening to country music anymore? If the bar has it, the Secret DJ App for the iPhone could fix all your problems. A combination of Foursquare and Spotify (or any other music streaming app, really), Secret DJ lets you check in to business and remotely control their jukebox. If you ever become “mayor” your musical stylings will go to the top of the queue. It also tells you what’s going on nearby, allows you to buy in iTunes or save to Spotify and even preview songs before you select them. We could easily see this being one of the few location-based apps we’d use regularly… when more bars in the US adopt it.

Blurring the line between analog and digital and allowing for further interplay between the two worlds, Moleskine has teamed up with Evernote to create the new Smart Notebook. The first release from the newly established Moleskine Digital, the notebook allows for creatives to synchronize their work across the analog-digital continuum with “Evernote ruled” and “Evernote squared” page styles that are optimized for snapshots using the new Page Camera feature from Evernote’s iOS app – taking a quick snapshot of one’s notes and sketches instantly uploads the work in a digital format. Additionally, Moleskine Smart Stickers included with the notebook allow for quick and easy workflow tagging for added customization and organization. Large ($29.95 USD) and small ($24.95 USD) versions of the Moleskine x Evernote Smart Notebook are set to debut on October 1 and can be pre-ordered online.

Weather reports have always been served in a conventional, and expected format, be it in a newspaper, online, or straight from the newsroom. Mobile development Hollr is set to change all that, with the studio’s newest app called SOLAR. This iPhone app displays the current and impending weather patterns in a unique and haptically-rendered colorscape. No charts, no graphs, only color. You’ll be able to scroll up to check the forecast, pull down to reveal conditions for the next three days, or you can pinch the screen to check out the weather for multiple locations you’ve saved at once. All of the viewing options can be seen with informative text, or without in a clean and elegant presentation. SOLAR is now available through the Apple App Store.
After spending a bit of time demoing the app pre-launch, we found SOLAR to be impressive for not only its sleek user interface, but also its snappy response time and streamlined functionality. While individuals who are used to a traditional layout and the tenants of more rudimentary layouts may find the SOLAR app interface somewhat “too artistic” and perhaps confusing, SOLAR is a great fit for the design-driven and tech-savvy niche that is looking for a little something different. Be it the refined sans serif typeface that augments a minimalistic UI or the chromatic palette that cull memories of Pantone scouring, SOLAR’s foray into the weather App niche is effectively executed towards an aesthetic-minded iOS user who has grown tired of mundane, under-pixelated or otherwise unimpressive and unmemorable Apps. From its stripped down and colorful Springboard icon to its convenient, gesture-heavy functionality, we look forward to seeing how SOLAR performs once it hits the App Store.

A famed industrial designer Dieter Rams, who was the head designer at Braun during 60s to 90s, has influenced countless designers, including Apple’s head designer Johnny Ive. Many designers have attempted to adhere to his 10 Principles of Good Design, and this new weather app from WTHR is also inspired by Rams’ principles. The minimalist app shows all of the necessary information in one page, making navigation easy and simple to use. Intuitive design allows the user to extract weather conditions in an instant, although it is perhaps a little too simplified if you are after detailed information, other than forecast and temperature.
